Faux Paw once told me that she was very interested in poi, which is traditionally the art of dancing with fire, buuuut people do it with glowsticks and get beautiful results that way, as well.
This does cover the entire piece of paper, all 8.5x11 inches. It's very rare that I do a picture that covers the whole paper and LOOK A BACKGROUND [even though it isn't much of one]. I'm pretty proud of how this one came out.
Yes, I did use a photo ref for her pose, but other than that, it came outta mah hed. :B
This piece is freakin' amazing. I spin poi (really bad still, but whatev) and you did a really good job with the strings. I espeically love the way you did the glow off of the glowsticks... it makes this picture just flow beautifully.
And I know how hard it is to draw somebody spinning poi... I actually just did my first one too for somebody's commission, so kudos for doing such a good job!
A lovely and highly exacting performance skill, to be sure. I have actually never heard of this before. "Centriiost" will have flame dancing - for entertanment and ceremonies - and ornamental flame arrangements.
Depicting something like this well must take an excellent sense of perspective...

P.S. She looks like a kangaroo. And are those strings or mounting wires? I assume wires...

This looks really neat, I've always wanted to colour like that with pencils 8C Oh, on the poi thing, it isn't necessarily a dance with fire. Here, the poi is traditionally a rock with a flax rope tied around it. In Maori tribes they spun them around so they hit against themselves in order to toughen themselves, kinda warrior training stuff, for both men and woman. Now they just use plastic bags balled out for performances to save them the pain. Just thought ya be interested in it. Polynesian has a lot of similar names and wordings for things related and unrelated.
Daily Literature Deviations is a group that is dedicated to bringing literature to the forefront of the deviantArt community. We attempt to accomplish this by daily featuring Literature artists from around the community that deserve the recognition, but are not getting it.
Each day we will feature 10 deviations from the Literature categories in a News Article. In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.
When it comes to community spirit, `Rushy is a shining example. From participating in devmeets, to providing positive encouragement to other artists, `Rushy can always be found demonstrating what it really takes to be a true deviant. It's without any hesitation that we are delighted to award the Deviousness Award for July 2009 to `RushyRead More
